UI Cancer Center, American Cancer Society to host conference Oct. 29

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society will present the Sixth Annual Psychosocial Oncology Conference Friday, Oct. 29 at the City Plaza Hotel in downtown Iowa City.

The multidisciplinary conference is for social workers, nurses, home care specialists and other health care professionals who work with individuals facing cancer. The theme of the symposium, "Refreshing the Spirit," is aimed at giving participants a renewed perspective on their approach to health care and how to continue growing as professionals and caregivers.

Two national keynote speakers, Dale Larson, Ph.D., and G. Neil Karn, will give presentations about new ways to rejuvenate the spirit of oncology health care professionals. Other topics include stress management techniques and adapting to a changing medical environment.

"We need to pay attention to all aspects of patient care, including the mind-body connection," said Joy Sutter, a social work specialist at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, "This conference is a good way to give us, as health care providers, a look at the whole picture."

Registration for the conference is $50, which includes lunch and processing fees. The program is approved for continuing education credits through the UI Hospitals and Clinics department of nursing and department of social service.
