University group plans for ‘National Young Women’s Day of Action’ Oct. 21

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Feminist Union will join a nationwide effort to recognize young women and the many issues that affect their lives during the seventh annual "National Young Women’s Day of Action," Thursday, Oct. 21.

The UI Feminist Union will staff an information table for the community on abortion laws, safe sex, sexual harassment, eating disorders and other issues, in the downtown Pedestrian Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A "Wage Equitable Bake Sale" as well as other activities are also planned at the information table.

On a national level, young women at 300 colleges, universities, high schools and community groups will celebrate National Young Women’s Day of Action to highlight the importance of young women raising their voices, finding their power and demanding their rights to make choices on many issues. Those issues include reproductive and sexual freedom, welfare and immigration reform, education, racial justice, jobs, violence, and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender rights. One of the goals of the Day of Action is to connect all of these issues and create a network of empowered young women.
