Hancher's four-millionth audience member will attend Taylor premiere Oct. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The four-millionth audience member in the history of the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium will attend the world premiere of Paul Taylor's "Arabesque" Friday, Oct. 15. Hancher director Wallace Chappell will be waiting by the lobby doors with a counter, ready to honor the audience member with flowers and two tickets to Hancher's Millennium Eve celebration, valued at $400.

The four-millionth patron will be introduced from the stage when curtain speeches are made by Chappell and Paul Taylor prior to the premiere by the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

The four million total includes audiences at all events in Hancher since the auditorium opened in 1972 -- not only Hancher-sponsored events but also events presented by the School of Music and the dance department, UI graduation ceremonies, and events sponsored by non-university renters of the facility.

Annual attendance at events in Hancher has averaged approximately 150,000.

The four millionth patron, by coincidence, will attend an event in Hancher's Millennium Festival, the nation's most ambitious and extensive performing-arts millennium celebration. The Paul Taylor commission is one of 20 commissions -- including 15 world or American premieres -- during Hancher's 1999-2000 season.

Tickets to the Paul Taylor performance are available from the Hancher box office, 319-335-1160 or toll-free in Iowa and Illinois, 1-800-HANCHER.
