Health Iowa presents information on health foods, supplements

IOWA CITY, Iowa — In the latest workshop in an educational series presented by Health Iowa, University of Iowa dietitian Julie Gallagher will sort through the hype about foods with added herbs and supplements to discover if the additions are really beneficial.

"Functional Foods: Do you need Kava Kava in your Java?" will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Miller Room in the Iowa Memorial Union. The workshop is part of the "Health Iowa Presents…" series sponsored by Health Iowa, the educational branch of the UI Student Health Service.

The workshop is designed to be an interactive presentation looking at the numerous claims accompanying new foods that advertise added herbs and other supplements. Many of these food products hawk their additions as necessary, healthier and tastier than products without the supplements. The workshop will help teach people how to decide for themselves if the products are really helpful and worth the extra cost.

Gallagher, a registered dietitian for the UI Student Health Service, will present the interactive workshop free. No registration is required. Additional workshops with different presenters will be held in November and December.
