(NOTE TO EDITORS: See below for a list of sites where the teleconference described in this release will be available.)

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Caring for family members with dementia will be the focus of an interactive teleconference to be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30, at eight sites linked by the Iowa Communications Network. The teleconference, titled "Family Involvement in Care," is sponsored by the Iowa Geriatric Education Center and the UI College of Nursing.

Designed primarily for nurses and other health care professionals, the teleconference will feature Janet Specht, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing at the UI, and Lisa Kelley, a doctoral candidate in the College of Nursing. The two will present an overview of caregiving by family members and health care providers for persons with chronic illnesses. They will go on to discuss the role changes that family caregivers experience throughout the development of dementia and other illnesses, including the changes required when ill persons are moved from the home to a new care setting such as a nursing home, assisted living facility, day care center or hospital.

Both academic credit and continuing education credit are available to participants.

For information or to register, call the Off Campus Courses and Programs office of the UI Center for Credit Programs at (800) 272-6430. For more information about other aging related programs, visit the Iowa Geriatric Education Center's "Master Calendar" on the world wide web at
