Drum appointed to National Science Foundation

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Charles S. Drum, director for campus communications at the University of Iowa, will take a year's leave of absence to serve as a public affairs specialist for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington, D.C.

The appointment was announced by Mary Hanson, section head of Media Relations and Public Information in the NSF Office of Legislative and Public Affairs.

Drum, a 25-year veteran in the UI Office of Communications and Outreach, will assume his new duties in January. He will work with programs in two NSF directorates: Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences and Education and Human Resources.

The National Science Foundation is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through programs that invest nearly $4 billion per year in almost 20,000 research and education projects in science and engineering.
