UI offers life preparation program for sons of staff, faculty

IOWA CITY, Iowa -—Families of UI staff and faculty will have the opportunity Wednesday, Nov. 17 to participate in a new program called Prepare Our Sons for Life.

Laura Reed, director of the UI WorkLife program, and one of the organizers of Prepare Our Sons, says the program is a response to the question, "What about the boys?" which she says always arises in response to the UI’s participation in Take Our Daughters to Work day.

"The program for daughters is open to all school-aged children, but research indicates that the needs of girls and boys are different and special activities are needed. Girls tend to need a program focused on work, where research shows that boys need one more focused on the rest of life. In this spirit, UI WorkLife and the Office of Affirmative Action developed a program to address the balancing of work/life issues, particularly for boys/young men and their families. We welcome all school-aged children," Reed says.

Parents (or adult sponsors) employed at the UI and their school-aged children are encouraged to participate in the day's activities. Parents of younger children are welcome to attend the parent session. The afternoon program begins with a pizza lunch for the children and their parents and a variety of workshops for children and parents. There will be tours of Carver Hawkeye Arena, a prize giveaway, and a short speech to close the day's events. Transportation to and from the arena will be provided.

The UI WorkLife/Human Resources Office, the Office of Affirmative Action, UI Staff Council, Iowa Memorial Union, and the Office of the Provost are supporting this program. RSVPs are requested for all events by Nov. 12. To RSVP, or for more information, call the UI WorkLife office, 353-2314.
