Students plan Rock the Vote rally Nov. 11 at UI Pentacrest

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Associated Residence Halls at the University of Iowa and the Aliber-Hillel Jewish Student Center will hold an on-campus Rock the Vote voter registration rally at noon Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Pentacrest.

The rally is being held to increase voter registration, activism, and to get students involved in the political process, says David Leventhal, graduate student and Jews Campus Service Corps fellow. Leventhal is at the UI for the next year creating programs and activities that encourage participation, especially among the campus’ 800 Jewish students, to engage in a wide area of activities.

Leventhal says the UI rally is independent of the national Rock the Vote project created nine years ago to educate youth about issues affecting them, and motivating youth to vote and become involved in politics.

Leventhal says the two campus organizations are working with other student organizations that support presidential candidates Bradley, Bush and Gore, as well as the University Democrats and Republicans student organizations to get the candidates or their representatives to visit the UI.

The Rock the Vote rally is not aimed at any particular candidate and doesn’t endorse any political party, Leventhal says.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Aliber-Hillel Jewish Student Center at (319) 338-0778.
