UI Parents Association funds student service projects
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Parents
Association Board of Directors has allocated $31,898 to fund eight student
programs and services for the 1999-2000 academic year. Working with Parents
Fund for Student Support dollars raised through the UI Foundation, the board
chose from a list of 18 proposed projects. Those selected are:
-- Parent Calling Project, Office of Vice President
for Student Services, $3,500. Parents of first-year students are contacted
for input regarding their students first few months on campus
-- WOW: Weeks of Welcome Activities, Admissions, Residence
Services, Office of Student Life, $2,500. Money supports activities that help
new students adjust to the campus community
-- Three Iowa Memorial Union e-mail stations (two
handicap accessible, $6,600; and four handicap accessible e-mail stations,
Residence Services, $8,800). Dedicated "express mail" stations for
communication and registration activities only helps keep computer labs open
for assigned class work.
-- Alcohol-Free Tailgate, Stepping Up Project, $2,100.
Pre-game party offers an environment of food, music and games without alcohol.
-- Safewalk, Womens Resource and Action Center,
$7,500; Funds support an intern coordinator for student volunteers who "safe
walk" other students home at night.
-- New Student Handbook, Admissions-Orientation, $700;
Postage is paid for mailing handbook and orientation materials to parents
of students who couldnt attend orientation.
-- Daily Planner ad, Hawkeye Event Tracker, Department
of Public Safety, $198. This page gives students quick reference to Public
Safety phone numbers and services provided.
Previous projects funded by the Parents Association
include Parents Weekend, the Student Loan Fund, the emergency telephone system,
University libraries, Sesquicentennial Scholarships, campus lighting and Opportunity
Founded as the Dads Association in 1955, the
UI Parents Association is composed of 32 parents of UI students who volunteer
their time to assist other UI parents with questions or concerns and to advise
and support the universitys goal.
