Gift from Caterpillar Foundation enhances engineering education at the University of Iowa
IOWA CITY, IowaCaterpillar Inc., a global company, has given the University of Iowa Foundation $30,000 for scholarships and education grants that will help students grow and achieve during the 1999-2000 academic season.
This contribution maintains the Caterpillar Excellence Fund at the UI College of Engineering. Established in 1991, the fund has helped the college continue faculty development, improve facilities and promote student achievement.
"This is a relationship built over time, and it has yielded some excellent results for both the UI College of Engineering and for us," said Marilyn Leyland, a Caterpillar spokesperson. "Caterpillar has had the satisfaction of supporting student education, and weve also recruited some good employees from Iowas engineering program."
The Caterpillar Foundation gift will provide:
--Assistance for the well-known Caterpillar Engineering Colloquium Series, which sustains faculty development in the College of Engineering;
--Financial resources to help cover educational expenses for Caterpillar scholarsstudents in the College of Engineering who receive the Caterpillar Engineering Scholarships;
--Funding for curricular and technological innovations, including multimedia equipment upgrades in the colleges new building addition;
--Continued support for the Universitys Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, which helps open doors for women in scientific and technical areas.
Caterpillar matches its employees charitable gifts through a program that doubles contributions up to $1,000 from employees, retirees and corporate directors. Throughout the last three decades, the Caterpillar Foundation has provided grants and matching gifts totaling more than $290,000 to the UI Foundation in support of various UI projects.
Caterpillar is the worlds leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Headquartered in Peoria, Ill., the company posted record sales and revenues of $20.98 billion in 1998.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff members work with alumni and friends to provide support for a broad range of projects and programs at the University of Iowa.
