Burke wins Pathfinder Award for promotion of women in sports
IOWA CITY, Iowa N. Peggy Burke, an emeritus associate professor of sport, health, leisure, and physical studies at the University of Iowa, has won a 1999 Pathfinder Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).
The Pathfinder award recognizes women who have demonstrated "continuous dedication to the advocacy, recruitment, and enhancement of girls and women in sports." The award began in 1991 and is given annually to one woman in each state.
Burke has been actively involved in the promotion of women in sport since 1957 and has received several awards for her pioneering efforts. She has written journal articles and book chapters about the history of women in sport and the impact of Title IX. Her awards include: the University of Iowa Distinguished Achievement Award, Pioneer in Women's Sports Award from the Women's Sports Foundation, and the Honor Fellow Award from NAGWS.
