Maxson is selected as drum major of the UI Hawkeye Marching Band

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- John Prescott Maxson of Deerfield, Ill, has been selected as the new drum major of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band.

Maxson, who will be a sophomore theatre arts major this fall, performed in the trombone section of the band last season. He was a drum major in his high school band for two years and received "First Class Drum Major" certification at the national Smith-Walbridge Drum Major Clinics prior to attending the UI.

Maxson will follow Chad Smith as drum major of the Hawkeye Marching Band. Smith, a music education major who will be student teaching next fall, is a five-year member of the Hawkeye Marching Band. He served as drum major for the past three years.

Nassor Cooper, Jeff Smith, Dan Steinberg and Faraji Hubbard also auditioned for the drum major position. The candidates were required to demonstrate their knowledge of marching fundamentals, conducting and performance showmanship. Many current members of the Hawkeye Marching Band were in attendance, cheering on the candidates.

Maxson's first performance will be at the UI-Nebraska football game on Sept. 4 in Kinnick Stadium.
