Burlington residents invited to learn more about the
UI Public Health Initiative
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Residents of Burlington and the
surrounding area who are interested in public health and public health distance
learning opportunities are invited to meet with a representative from the
University of Iowa on Friday, May 14, to discuss the universitys Public
Health Initiative (PHI).
The meeting, scheduled to take place at Ryan's Steakhouse
from 10 to 11:30 a.m., is open to the public. Ryan's Steakhouse is located
at 3535 Agency Road in Burlington. The local host for the meeting will be
Barbara Baker of the Des Moines County Health Center. The UI representative
will be James Merchant, M.D., Dr.P.H., UI professor and head of preventive
medicine and environmental health.
Under the PHI, a new College of Public Health will
be formed at the UI beginning July 1, 1999. New public health educational
opportunities also will be made available in local communities throughout
Iowa via distance learning. For the first time in Iowa, students will be able
to pursue a master of public health degree as well as a non-degree certificate
in public health.
