UI students encouraged to ‘Graduate With Class’

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Creating an atmosphere of dignity and courtesy at commencement exercises is the goal of a University of Iowa campaign called "Graduate With Class."

"Commencement is a proud moment for students, their families and friends. We hope that a spirit of pride and mutual respect will encourage all of our students to honor this occasion," says Phillip Jones, UI vice president for student services.

Candidates participating in spring commencement exercises the weekend of May 14-16 are being asked to cooperate with the "Graduate With Class" campaign through courteous conduct and by dressing appropriately. Alcoholic beverages will not be allowed, and intoxicated students will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.

"We have high expectations that candidates for graduation will cooperate in making this a special occasion for all," Jones says, adding, "After recent graduation ceremonies, family members and guests have expressed their appreciation for the sense of dignity and pride displayed by our graduates."
