UI accounting department receives $15,000 scholarship donation from Amoco

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa department of accounting has recently received $15,000 from the Amoco Foundation to support scholarships for accounting majors.

According to Dan Collins, chair of the UI department of accounting, the funds will be used to award four $2,500 scholarships to students entering the UI Master of Accountancy program, one $2,000 scholarship to an accounting major (junior or senior) and three $1,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen. He added that $5,000 of $15,000 amount is earmarked for minority scholarships

"These scholarships will not only help us attract quality students into our program, but also encourage current students to enter the Master of Accountancy program," Collins said.

The Master of Accountancy program is a 30-hour program for those students with an accounting undergraduate degree that satisfies the newly mandated 150-hour requirement to become a Certified Public Accountant. This requirement which has been adopted by 44 states, goes into effect in Iowa Jan. 1, 2001.

The scholarships are available this fall to potential UI accounting students and current UI students. To apply or for more information, call the department of accounting at (319) 335-0910.
