U.S. News  gives UI primary care, rural medicine, paleontology high scores

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa has the nation's sixth best graduate program in medical primary care, the seventh best graduate program in rural medicine, and the seventh best graduate program in paleontology, according to new rankings from the magazine U.S. News & World Report released today.

The annual rankings, to be included in U.S. News's guidebook "2000 America's Best Graduate Schools," this year for the first time included the UI College of Medicine as a comprehensive medical institution, ranking it 30th among all 124 accredited medical schools in the United States and third among the Big Ten universities, after the University of Michigan and Northwestern.

U.S. News ranked several other UI graduate schools and programs among the top 10 and top 50 in the country:
* The UI College of Law was ranked 23rd (tied with the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign) among the nation's 175 accredited law schools, up from 24th in 1998.
* The UI College of Law's international law program was ranked 10th, up from 11th last year.
* The UI College of Education was ranked 27th (tied with Pennsylvania State University-University Park) among the nation's 188 graduate education programs granting Ph.D. or Ed.D. degrees, down from 15th in 1998.
* The UI College of Education's educational psychology program was ranked eighth (tied with Teachers College, Columbia University), up from ninth in 1998.

"It's always heartening when someone outside the University of Iowa confirms what we've known for years, that our university offers outstanding educational opportunity across a spectrum of disciplines," UI President Mary Sue Coleman said. "The faculty, staff and students who benefit from and contribute to our top-notch programs should consider the magazine's rankings as further evidence of the success of their commitment and hard work."

The UI medical primary care program's ranking as sixth is up from 11th in 1998. The UI paleontology program's ranking as 7th in the nation is up from 16th in 1996, the last year the specialty was ranked (at UI, paleontology is a College of Liberal Arts program). And the UI rural medicine program's ranking as 7th is up from ninth in 1998.

Rankings are based on a variety of criteria, including academic reputation of programs as well as data specific to each discipline. In 1997, the magazine altered the way it reports rankings, resulting in more ties between programs receiving similar scores.

The 2000 report includes new rankings this year for graduate programs in business, law, medicine (comprehensive and primary care), engineering, education and library science, as well as Ph.D. programs in biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics and physics.

The complete guidebook will be available on newsstands and in bookstores Tuesday, April 6. The March 29 magazine issue containing excerpts from the guide and select rankings tables (business, law, medicine, education and engineering) will appear on newsstands Monday, March 22. The rankings are also available on the magazine's web site, U.S. News Online, at

Also included in the 2000 guidebook but not updated this year will be rankings for a variety of other programs ranked in either 1997 or 1998. UI will appear in a number of those rankings as well (see list below).
