National group awards dissertation prize to UI graduate

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa graduate has won the 1998 Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Communication Association. David Cheshier, who is now an assistant professor of communication at Georgia State University, was one of only three young scholars nationwide to achieve this distinction.

Cheshier's dissertation, titled, "The Rhetorical Constitution of Late Twentieth Century American Public Spheres," was completed under the direction of Bruce Gronbeck and Michael-Calvin McGee, both UI professors of communication studies.

The National Communication Association is the oldest and largest scholarly society for communication professionals.
