Trio Parnassus plays Beethoven, Copland, Brahms in Hancher debut

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Trio Parnassus, one of Europe's most acclaimed piano trios, will make its University of Iowa debut in a concert of music by Beethoven, Copland and Brahms at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 in Clapp Recital Hall. The concert, presented by Hancher Auditorium, will feature Beethoven's Trio No. 2 in G Major, Copland's "Vitebsk: Study on a Jewish Theme" and Brahms' Trio No. 1 in B Major.

Trio Parnassus -- pianist Chia Chou, violinist Wolfgang Schroeder and cellist Michael Gross -- had won a significant place in European concert life long before the ensemble's 1996-97 U.S. debut that included a performance on Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series.

The ensemble was formed in 1983 and almost immediately won the International Chamber Music Competition and a dedicated European following. The Linzer Tageblatt called the trio's playing "chamber music of the highest caliber," and the Berliner Tageblatt exclaimed, "This ensemble has everything you could expect from a piano trio, virtuosity from each player, homogeneous playing, and a radiating joy of making music."

Trio Parnassus has released more than a dozen CDs on the distinguished German label Dabringhaus and Grimm, including the complete piano trios of Brahms, and trios by Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy and Ravel.

A review of their Brahms collection in Classic CD magazine praised the Trio Parnassus playing for its "refinement and sonorous splendor." An American Record Guide review proclaimed, "There is no question that this is, in more ways than one, a world-class trio. They play with superb unanimity of ensemble and consummate polish. There is an abundance of youthful verve, too, well tempered by painstaking attention to dynamics and tempo markings, and keen sensitivity to the changing moods of the music. . . . The music is utterly captivating."

Cantebury Inn and Suites and Eye Surgeons Associates, P.C. are the corporate sponsors of the Trio Parnassus concert through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets for Trio Parnassus are $18 ($14.40 for UI students and senior citizens, and $9 for audience members 17 and younger), from the Hancher box office.
