Public Safety to team up with Iowa City, Coralville for enforcement effort

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Officers from the University of Iowa department of public safety will join local and state law enforcement officers to conduct checkpoints throughout Iowa City, Coralville and on the UI campus Monday and Tuesday, June 28 and 29. The checkpoints will be conducted from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. each evening.

The UI officers will be working with officers from the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa City and Coralville police departments to observe drivers for possible violations such as driving while intoxicated, use of seat belts and child restraints, open containers of alcohol, and having a valid driver’s license.

Checkpoints on the UI campus will be located near Hancher Auditorium on Park Road and near Carver Hawkeye Arena on Hawkins Drive.

The checkpoint activity fulfills a requirement of a grant of $8,800 that the department of public safety received earlier this year from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. In addition to funding overtime enforcement activities, the department of public safety has used the grant funds for public information and educational activities, including a brochure about OWI laws and how alcohol consumption affects drivers. The grant also enabled public safety to purchase an in-car video system to enhance officer safety and to be used as a training resource.
