Workshop offered on legal issues for same-sex couples

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Because same-sex couples cannot legally marry, they face financial, tax and legal issues that require particular attention. As part of its ongoing "Women and Money" series, the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa and the Iowa Women’s Foundation are sponsoring a workshop to address these issues. "The Domestic Partnership Workshop" will be Tuesday, June 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Minnesota Room of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Patricia A. Cain, UI professor of law, will lead the workshop. Cain says, "Lesbian and gay couples can sometimes take advantage of legal protections offered by domestic partnership rules that have been passed by local governments or by employers." She cautions, however, that "most couples will need to create their own legal protections by using private contracts or property arrangements." The workshop will focus on both the public domestic partnership rules available for some couples and private legal arrangements that partners should consider using to protect their relationships.

Workshop participants are encouraged to ask questions about tax or property laws that affect them and their relationships.

The workshop is free and open to the public. For more information or to request accommodations necessary to attend, please call 335-1486.
