UI Hospitals and Clinics program creates new scholarship for student volunteers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A new scholarship will recognize senior-year members of the Volunteer Program's College Student Leader Board at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Students will be honored for their outstanding leadership and service by the new award, created in recognition of a 1999 UI graduate who volunteered at the UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Senior students selected for the Andrew W. Burchett College Student Leader Award will receive $500 in recognition of their exceptional volunteer service to the UI Hospitals and Clinics. Burchett is a 1999 UI graduate whose distinguished leadership helped establish the new College Student Leader Board, strengthening the hospital's Volunteer Program.

"Andy has been involved with the leader board project from its beginning," said Mary Ameche, director of the 1,200-member Volunteer Program. "The award is in honor of his incredible hard work and dedication to our program as well as his tenacity and passion for volunteerism."

The board helps recruit, orient and schedule student volunteers at the UI Hospitals and Clinics. Ameche said the new structure strengthens the student volunteer experience and provides student leadership opportunities. Burchett served as chair of the charter board during the 1998-99 academic year.

The scholarships are funded by the UI Hospitals and Clinics Volunteer Program through earnings from the Volunteer Gift Shop and the Volunteer Refreshment Kiosk and carts, all providing services to patients, visitors and staff at the UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Burchett is the son of Allen and Marty Burchett of Harlan.
