Grainne Martin and Usha Balakrishnan join UI Research Office

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Grainne Prince Martin and Usha Balakrishnan have been named to positions in the UI Office of the Vice President for Research. Martin will take the position of associate counsel for research beginning July 1. Balakrishnan will begin Sept. 1 as director of research marketing and corporate relations. The position reports also to the vice president for university relations.

Martin received a B.A. degree in French from Cornell College, an M.A. degree in French from the UI and a J.D. degree from the UI College of Law. She has been associate director and compliance officer in the UI office of affirmative action since 1989, prior to which she practiced law with private firms in Muscatine. As associate counsel for research, she will be responsible for providing legal counsel on issues relevant to research, scholarship, and creative activity, including intellectual property, research ethics, information technology, and technology transfers.

Balakrishnan received a bachelor of commerce degree from Bombay University, India, and an MBA from the University of Iowa. She was business analyst for the UI Research Foundation from 1991 to 1994 and associate director from 1994 to 1998. She is returning to Iowa from Atlanta, Ga. where for the last year she has worked as a consultant in her own firm. As director of research marketing and corporate relations, she will be responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies for research-related enterprises at the UI.

The Office of the Vice President for Research provides administrative service and support for the university’s research mission and is the university’s primary link to the business and industrial sectors. Among the 25 units reporting to the office are the office of Federal Relations, Information Technology Services, Sponsored Programs, the Obermann Center for Advanced studies, Research Marketing, the Senior Associate Counsel, Oakdale Research Park, Technology Innovation Center, and UI Research Foundation, as well as several central facilities supporting research.
