UI university librarian receives national award

IOWA CITY — Sheila Creth, university librarian at the University of Iowa, has been named winner of the 1999 Library and Information Technology Association Gaylord award for achievement in library information technology.

The LITA/Gaylord award, which carries a $1,000 stipend and recognizes outstanding achievement in the creative use of information technology for improving or enhancing library services, is given annually by LITA, a division of the American Library Association.

"Sheila has made an outstanding contribution to library services by initiating the creation and implementation of the Information Arcade at the University of Iowa," said Fred Gertler, award committee chair.

The Information Arcade "has the distinction of being the first example of such a highly networked facility and holds a prominent role in moving scholarship and teaching into the 21st century," Gertler said.

Creth, who directs the UI’s main and 11 branch libraries, will formally receive the award on Monday, June 8 in New Orleans at the American Library Association’s annual conference.
