U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, federal judge visit UI Oct. 21

IOWA CITY — United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and federal Judge John M. Ferren will visit the University of Iowa College of Law to participate jointly in the fourth annual Richard S. Levitt Lecture on Oct. 21.

The two judges will make presentations about former U.S. Supreme Court Justice and Iowa law school dean Wiley B. Rutledge in an afternoon event called "Justice Rutledge Remembered."

Stevens will share his recollections of his time spent serving as a law clerk for the late Justice who served on the Supreme Court from 1943 to 1949 and as UI law school dean from 1935 to 1939. Ferren, an associate judge at the Washington D.C. Court of Appeals, who is writing a biography about Rutledge, will present selections from it about the late Justice’s professional achievements and how he came to be appointed to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The event coincides with homecoming weekend, and former UI law students under Rutledge will be invited to the Levitt lecture as special guests.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Second Floor Ballroom in the Iowa Memorial Union. A public reception will follow the lecture.
