UI's David Jackson receives disability awareness award

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- David Jackson, service manager in Facilities Services Group (FSG), recently received this year's University of Iowa Council on Disability Awareness Achievement Award.

Two years ago Jackson initiated a program to improve the working environment for FSG employees with disabilities. He encouraged applicants with disabilities to seek and obtain employment in FSG and initiated a team to review the work needs of deaf employees. The result was new assistive technology to aid communication and American Sign Language classes for FSG employees. The process resulted in better understanding and increased communication between deaf employees and their co-workers and supervisors, an increase in employment of people with disabilities, and a most supportive work environment for those employees.

The Council on Disability Awareness Award, first awarded to Hancher Auditorium in 1998, acknowledges the efforts and achievements of individuals or organizations on campus that contribute to the integration and inclusion of persons with disabilities in campus life or within the community at large. The award was formally presented during Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week.
