UI Small Business Development Center offers sales tax seminars

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center is holding seminars Wednesday, Jan. 20 and Wednesday, Jan. 27 about sales taxes, use taxes and tax withholding.

The first seminar, from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 20, will cover what items and services are taxable, and how small businesses should collect and remit sales and local option taxes. Participants will receive hands-on experience completing tax forms in class.

The second seminar, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Jan. 27, is designed for contractors. Iowa's sales tax rules on new construction and repair will be explained, as well as what items and services should be taxed or not taxed.

The seminars, presented by Don Burr of the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance, will be held in Room S401 of the Pappajohn Business Administration Building (at Jefferson and Clinton streets in Iowa City.)
