Jones Issues Statement on Black Entrepreneurial Society Event
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Phillip Jones, University of Iowa vice president
for student services, issued the following statement today:
"Our investigation of the 'social event' sponsored by the Black
Entrepreneurial Society in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU)
on Saturday, January 30, 1999 is now reasonably complete.
"Based on that investigation, we have concluded that the use of
the IMU facilities on that evening was not consistent with the General
Policy on Use of University Facilities, §V-35.2 of the University
"It appears that, in this instance, the exact nature of what was
to occur was not fully understood by the sponsoring organization and, in
any event, was not fully shared with staff prior to the event. Accordingly,
advertising for the event did not contain adequate advance notice of the
exact nature of the performance.
"It further appears that the performers were engaged in unauthorized
commercial profit-making activities, i.e. performers soliciting tips and
selling photos/posters, and that the sponsoring organization did not and
probably could not adequately control the activities of the performers.
The absence of such control or other security measures creates a risk of
violations of law.
"All in all, this was not a use consistent with the mission of
these university facilities and the IMU will not be available for similar
events in the future. Reasonable corrective actions will be taken to ensure
that student organizations abide by university solicitation and event registration
