Thu selected to national agricultural air quality task force
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Kendall M. Thu Ph.D., research scientist for the
Institute for Rural and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa,
has been appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman to serve
on the USDA Agricultural Air Quality Task Force.
Thu has been active in researching the environmental and economic impact
of hog factories on surrounding communities. For example, his work has
indicated potential health risks among neighbors of large-scale swine operations.
Thu and his colleagues are currently studying emissions produced by these
operations and their potential relationship to health symptoms developing
in neighboring communities.
It was such research that prompted Glickman to select Thu to serve on
the task force. The Agricultural Air Quality Task Force has been active
in providing the secretary with advice on issues related to air quality
Thu will serve on the task force from Jan. 14, 1999 to Aug. 7, 2000.
