UI junior wins College of Liberal Arts logo design contest
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa junior will leave his mark on
the UI College of Liberal Arts in the form of a new logo to be used on
college materials. Kevin Oestenstad, a graphic design major from Spencer
won a logo design contest sponsored by the college, earning the right to
have his design used in a variety of media and settings to enhance the
identity of the college.
At a reception at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 Linda Maxson, dean of the
College of Liberal Arts, will unveil the new logo and present Oestentad
with a certificate and a $1,000 cash prize. The media as well as the public
are invited to attend the reception in Room 302 Shaeffer Hall.
Oestenstad's entry was chosen from nearly 30 designs submitted. The
contest was open to students, faculty, and staff within the college. Ab
Gratama, an associate professor of art and art history and the chairman
of the advisory committee that selected the winning design, said Oestentad's
design was chosen because it was "the most modern and efficient representation.
It looks to the future rather than reflecting on the past."
Oestenstad said his logo represents the college as a bridge for students
crossing into their futures. "It is this bridge with its stability
and support that will instill confidence within us and enable us to overcome
new obstacles we may face on our journey through life," he wrote in
a statement submitted with his contest entry.
(Editors note: Camera-ready images of Oestenstad's logo design will
be available at the Feb. 11 logo unveiling and reception.)
