UI, Riverside Theatre plan 'Shakespeare Slam' with three productions

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University Theatres and Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa and Riverside Theatre in Iowa City are joining forces to sponsor a "Shakespeare Slam" in conjunction with productions of three of the Bard's plays this spring and summer. The competition will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Mill Restaurant in downtown Iowa City.

Entrants, who may be individuals or groups, must register for the "Shakespeare Slam" by Jan. 27. Some 20 competitors will be selected at random from all entrants and notified on Feb. 1.

For registration materials, contact Tim Meier at Hancher Auditorium, 319-335-1130. On-line registration is possible at

Poetry slams have become popular events throughout the country. "Shakespeare Slam: Sonnets, Songs, Soliloquies" will be a lyrical joust, pitting entrant against entrant in good-natured competition. Entrants will choose sonnets, songs or soliloquies by Shakespeare, seeking to impress both the judges and the audience with the vitality and originality of their performances. Ties will be broken by audience applause.

Hancher Auditorium will present the Guthrie Theatre production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- with corporate sponsorship by Prairie Lights and the Java House -- March 3-4; University Theatres will stage "The Tempest" April 6-16 in the UI Theatre Building; and Riverside Theatre will present "Twelfth Night" as the inaugural production of the Riverside Shakespeare Festival June 8-18 in Iowa City's City Park.

Tickets for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "The Tempest" are now on sale through the Hancher box office. Box office hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. From the local calling area dial 335-1160. Long distance outside the Iowa City area is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER. Fax to (319) 353-2284. Orders may be charged to VISA, MasterCard or American Express. UI students may charge their purchases to their university bills, and UI faculty and staff may select the option of payroll deduction.

People with special needs for access, seating and auxiliary services should dial (319) 335-1158. This number will be answered by box office personnel prepared to offer assistance with handicapped parking, wheelchair access and seating, hearing augmentation and other services. The line is equipped with TDD for people with hearing impairment who use that technology.

The box office will be closed Dec. 19-26 and Jan. 1-17 for UI winter break.
