O'Hara named associate dean in UI College of Liberal Arts

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Michael O'Hara, chairman of the University of Iowa psychology department, has been appointed associate dean for research and development in the College of Liberal Arts. His appointment is effective Jan. 3.

O'Hara joined the psychology faculty in 1980, achieved the rank of full professor in 1990, and has served as the department's chairman since 1994. As associate dean for research and development, O'Hara will have charge of faculty development and internal research awards; develop external support for the college; oversee the college's research centers, institutes, and academic resources centers; and handle other administrative tasks. He also will lead the college in the area of priorities and support for distance education and web-based learning.

Linda Maxson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, said O'Hara's experience leading one of the college's largest departments with faculty representing a broad range of research methodologies would be an excellent foundation for his new job of managing the college's research efforts.

"As a psychologist, Mike is in close touch with the social sciences, clinical sciences, and natural sciences, and as associate dean he is committed to promoting and supporting research and artistic development in all the disciplinary areas of the college," Maxson said. "I know him to be a tireless worker on behalf of faculty and students, an articulate and persuasive advocate for resources, and an energetic leader as well as an accomplished administrator."
