UI Museum of Natural History sponsors Aug. 28 field trip

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History will sponsor a one-hour guided walk at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 focusing on Mormon Handcart Park and its dramatic history. Participants are asked to meet in the Hawkeye Recreation Fields parking lot, a free parking lot located on north Hawkeye Drive and adjacent to the park.

Program Coordinator David Brenzel says that from 1856-58, the park was the staging area for one of the most remarkable treks in the history of the American West, a journey of more than 1,000 miles to Salt Lake City by nearly 1,900 European immigrants who had recently converted to the Mormon Church.

The field trip, part of the Museum's "Afternoon With a Scientist" public education and lecture series, will be led by Dr. Loren Horton, state senior historian, emeritus, and University of Iowa Professor of Biological Sciences Jeffrey Schabilion.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information or to be placed on the museum's mailing list, contact David Brenzel, program coordinator, at 335-0482 or at

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact David Brenzel at either the phone number or e-mail address listed above.
