Women's Center kicks off Coffeehouse with 'Pirate Queens'

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The first University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center Coffeehouse of the new academic year kicks off Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at 10 South Gilbert St.

The Coffeehouse is a monthly performance space with an open mike to celebrate women's voices and features different performers each month. On Friday Graffiti Theatre presents "Pirate Queens!", a show about historical women pirates, starring Mara McCann, Meredith Ratzel, Shelly Welch and Rochelle Honey, and featuring stories, songs and puppets.

UI graduate student, Meg Maurer, will perform as a drag king. "She's lively, energetic, and hysterically funny," says Coffeehouse co-organizer Suzi Steffen. "We haven't had drag before, and we’re excited about partaking in something that's so popular in Iowa City right now," Steffen adds.

Women are welcome to read, perform, sing, dance or play music during "open mike" time. The Coffeehouse is free, but a donation is requested at the door. To sign up for open mike or for more information, call the Women’s Center at 335-1486.
