MEDIA ADVISORY: UI College of Medicine Fifth annual White Coat Ceremony Aug. 20

The University of Iowa College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony will welcome 157 new medical students on Friday, Aug. 20 at 3 p.m. in Hancher Auditorium. The ceremony -- part of the college's orientation program -- stresses to students the importance of caring about patients while learning to take care of them.

Francois M. Abboud, M.D., Edith King Pearson Professor and head of the UI department of internal medicine, will deliver an address to the students entitled, "Rage, Equanimity and Compassion." Following the address, students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, they will recite the Oath of Hippocrates. A reception will follow in the Hancher lobby.

Reporters and news photographers are welcome to cover this event. For more information, contact Dave Pedersen at (319) 335-8032.
