Dubuque Street closed again for skywalk construction
IOWA CITY, Iowa One block of Dubuque Street
between Jefferson St. and Iowa Avenue will be closed Thursday and Friday,
Aug. 12-13, for work on the skywalk linking the University of Iowa Biology
Building and new biological sciences building.
In this phase of construction, contractors will be
installing exterior panels on the skywalk roof, wall, and soffit.
Designed by architect Siah Armajani, the skywalk links
the two buildings at the second floor, providing easy access for students,
faculty, and staff working in the biological sciences department. An underground
tunnel was deemed too costly.
Construction of the new building is the first phase
of a two-part initiative to renew the biological sciences complex. Also as
part of phase one, workers have remodeled the old Biology Annex, which houses
the departmental library. The second phase of the project will involve the
renovation of the old Biology Building, which was built in 1902 as the first
home of the UI College of Medicine as well as improvements of building support
systems in the existing biology buildings. The new building was designed by
Brooks, Borg and Skiles, a Des Moines architectural firm. McComas Lacina of
Iowa City is the general contractor.
