UI faculty, students to be honored at Global Scholar reception May 5

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa International Programs will host a reception Wednesday, May 5 to honor students and faculty who received scholarships and fellowships supporting international study and research. The reception will also recognize foreign and U.S. students participating in reciprocal exchange programs.

Michael McNulty, UI associate provost and dean of International Programs, will speak at the Global Scholars reception which will be held in the International Center Lounge from noon to 1:30 p.m.

"The University of Iowa is very pleased to have the opportunity to recognize and honor these individuals who are making valuable contributions to international education and research," said Elizabeth Swanson, associate dean of International Programs.

An estimated 19 UI faculty and 110 UI students have received fellowships or scholarships to conduct research or study abroad in the summer of 1999 or in the 1999-2000 academic year. Faculty members' global scholarship is supported by a number of UI offices, departments and programs. Students have earned more than $500,000 in scholarships and fellowships from a variety of sources.

Those sources include: the T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Fellowships; Fulbright Grants; Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships; the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) Dissertation Research Grants; CAPS Faculty Research Grants; Global Scholar Awards; Presidential Scholarships for Study Abroad; Stanley Undergraduate Scholarships; Stanley Fellowships for Graduate Student Research Abroad; Naomi Gunderson Scholarship for Foreign Study Abroad; National Security Education Program; the Center for International Rural and Environmental Health (CIREH) International Health Internships; and the CIREH International Health Research Fellowships.
