UI radiation therapy students take first place in national competition

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two students in the Radiation Therapist Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics took top honors in an annual competition for radiation therapy trainees April 25-26 in Chicago.

Robin Bierman and Amy Cook finished first in the national competition, which used a question-and-answer format -- similar to the TV show, "Jeopardy" -- to test competing students' knowledge and expertise.

The UI team's victory snapped a 10-year string of first-place finishes by students from the Mayo Clinic. It marked the first time UI students finished first in the competition, sponsored annually by the organization Chicago Area Radiation Therapists.

The Radiation Therapist Program at the UIHC trains students to administer ionizing radiation to cancer patients for the treatment of their diseases. Currently there are six students enrolled in the program.
