Quadrangle Public Cafeteria to close after 70 years
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- After 70 years and about
10,000,000 meals served, the Quadrangle Public Cafeteria at the University
of Iowa will close its doors after serving its last lunch on Friday, May 14.
The two west side dining services -- one at Quadrangle
and one at Hillcrest Hall -- are being consolidated into one dining facility
to be located in Hillcrest Hall, says Celine Hartwig, assistant to the director
of Residence Services at the UI. The Quadrangle Public Cafeteria will be renamed
and used to serve meals to residence hall students next year, while Hillcrest
food service is being remodeled, Hartwig said.
University faculty, staff and students who used to
dine at the Quadrangle Public Cafeteria will now have to go elsewhere for
their mid-day repast. Hartwig says: "We know many people are disappointed
about the closing of 'The Quad' but Hillcrest Food Service is in desperate
need of remodeling and we're very short on dining space for students." Persons
who wish to eat in Quadrangle Food Service, which is primarily for students,
may purchase a guest meal ticket at the door.
Lunch will continue to be served at the Quadrangle
Public Cafeteria from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays through May 14.
