IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries will host a 35th anniversary celebration to commemorate the founding of Friends, a group that supports the University academic library system, from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at the Iowa Memorial Union Ballroom, second floor.

"The Beat Goes On," a 1960s-style celebration, will feature a 6 p.m. reception with music popular to the era and a buffet dinner at 6:50 p.m.

Tickets are $35 per person and include a diner's buffet that will be followed by remarks by UI President Mary Sue Coleman, entertainment by the UI Latin American Dance Club, and lip sync, dance and costume contests. The costume contests, which are optional participation events, include three categories: a 1960s Fashion Statement That's Best Forgotten, Best Celebrity Impersonation, and the "Most Cool Cat."

The event is open to the public, but reservations are required and can be obtained by calling the UI Libraries at (319) 335-5867.
