Women, minorities are invited to highway construction
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Pre-Vocational
Training Program is hosting workshops in Des Moines and Iowa City for women
and minorities who are interested in highway construction careers.
The workshops will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday,
April 20 at the Iowa Workforce Development Center, 215 Keo Way, Suite 100
in Des Moines, and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 26 at the Iowa
Workforce Development Center, 1700 S. 1st Ave., Suite 11B in Iowa City.
The workshops, offered through the Iowa Highway Opportunity
Project, are intended to inform women and minorities about the opportunities
in this high-paying field that is in serious need of workers. Workshop leaders
will also discuss working hours, physical labor, travel, and safety considerations
involved in highway construction.
Following the sessions participants can get job referrals
and information about support for new employees, including childcare assistance,
mileage reimbursement and safety equipment purchase.

a $59,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation to fund the Iowa
Highway Opportunity Project, which also has the support of the Associated
General Contractors of Iowa.
