UI journalism professor wins national photo awards

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- John Kimmich-Javier, a University of Iowa professor of journalism, won two awards in the Pictures of the Year Competition sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. He won first place in sports action in the magazine division and an award of excellence for sports features, also in the magazine division.

The first place sports action photo featured the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and the award of excellence for sports features depicted a Basque rural sport. Kimmich-Javier noted that few of the winners in this annual competition are university professors. Most are full-time professional photojournalists.

Kimmich-Javier said that the grant money he received from UI Office of the Vice President for Research through the Support Program for the Arts and Humanities provided crucial resources for equipment and travel, enabling him to capture the award-winning images.

The Pictures of the Year contest is a highly competitive and prestigious juried event usually receiving more than 29,000 entries each year from the best photojournalists in the country. The award winning images will be published in a book, "The Best of Photojournalism," and will also be included in a yearlong travelling exhibition as well as on the Web at
