Small Business Development Center sponsors intellectual property rights seminar

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center is presenting a seminar, "Intellectual Property: The Software Developers Crown Jewels," from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Radisson Hotel, 2525 N. Dodge St., in Iowa City.

Gregory G. Williams, registered patent attorney with Simmons, Perrine, Albright and Ellwood in Cedar Rapids will be the speaker. Williams, who holds a law degree, a master of business administration (MBA) degree, and a bachelor's degree in physics from the UI, will give practical tips on how to protect intellectual property rights and on how to avoid violating the rights of others.

He will discuss pitfalls to avoid with respect to patenting computer software, how to maintain trade secret status in a collaborative environment, software licensing, consulting contracts, and practical procedures to reduce exposure to copyright infringement claims.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the Iowa Software Association. Registration fee is $60 for association members, $75 for non-members. To avoid a $10 late fee, please register by Sept. 28. For more information, call the Small Business Development Center at (319) 335-3742.
