UIHC sponsors seminar on cataracts, macular degeneration

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Area residents are invited to a free seminar discussing cataracts and macular degeneration Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hampton/Clarion Conference Center in Coralville. The seminar is sponsored by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) as part of its Centennial celebration.

Health for Your Lifetime: New Technologies to Fight Old Diseases--Macular Degeneration and Cataracts is the fourth in a series of educational seminars planned this year. The seminar will feature three University of Iowa ophthalmologists: Drs. Thomas Weingeist, Edwin Stone and Thomas Oetting.

Weingeist, professor and head of ophthalmology and visual sciences, will introduce the program with a brief description of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Stone will focus on the latest advances in treatment and therapy for macular degeneration, which refers to a group of disorders that can affect the central vision and is the most common cause of legal blindness in developed countries. It usually affects patients over age 65.

Oetting will discuss cataracts and new discoveries that have been made in the treatment of cataracts.

Pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, call (319) 384-8442 or 800-777-8442.
