'Forever Tango' steams up the UI Hancher Auditorium stage Oct. 2-4
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium will present
Luis Bravo's "Forever Tango" direct from its headline-grabbing
run on Broadway at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3 and at 3 p.m. Sunday,
"Forever Tango" features 14 extravagantly costumed dancers,
a vocalist and an 11-piece on-stage band, performing both traditional tangos
and contemporary variations, exploring the history, forms and moods of
Argentina's most famous cultural export.
The tango, Argentina's smoldering dance of power and passion, provokes
fascination far beyond the world of dance. It is likely to turn up anywhere,
from TV commercial parodies and Olympic ice dancing to Arnold Schwartzenegger's
"True Lies." In recent decades the late composer and bandoleon
player Astor Piazzolla helped the tango cross over into classical music
The tango mystique has helped "Forever Tango" pack houses,
and the show's quality has won rave reviews from Europe to Broadway. Sensuous
and sophisticated, the tango invents a world where everything can be conveyed
with the flick of a leg, the tug of a hand, the tap of a foot and the torrid
arch of an eyebrow. Creator and director Luis Bravo says, "The tango
is a feeling that you dance, a story you tell in three minutes. It's passionate,
it's melancholic. It's tender, violent. More than just a dance, the tango
is a music, a drama, a culture, a way of life."
In the New York Daily News Howard Kissell urged, "Put Argentina's
'Forever Tango' on your dance card! Stunningly costumed and lit, 'Forever
Tango' is an evening of sheer pleasure."
Telegroup Inc. is the corporate sponsor of "Forever Tango"
through the University of Iowa Foundation.
