IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History will sponsor a field trip on the joy of mushroom hunting and identification beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area.

A continuation of the Museum's Afternoon With a Scientist public education and lecture series, the field trip will be led by Dean Abel, mycologist, author and photographer. Abel is the co-author of A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms, chairman of the North American Mycological Association (NAMA) Photography Committee, and director of the annual NAMA Photo Contest.

The program is free and open to the public. Participants should gather in the main parking lot, near the rest rooms, at 1 p.m., rain or shine. Hikers are advised to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and a hat. Additional useful items include insect repellent, water, a jack knife and paper bag for collecting specimens, a hand-lens, and a camera.
