UI Museum of Natural History sponsors Sept. 19 field trip
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History
will sponsor a field trip on the joy of mushroom hunting and identification
beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Macbride Nature Recreation
A continuation of the Museum's Afternoon With a Scientist public
education and lecture series, the field trip will be led by Dean Abel,
mycologist, author and photographer. Abel is the co-author of A Guide
to Kansas Mushrooms, chairman of the North American Mycological Association
(NAMA) Photography Committee, and director of the annual NAMA Photo Contest.
The program is free and open to the public. Participants should gather
in the main parking lot, near the rest rooms, at 1 p.m., rain or shine.
Hikers are advised to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt
and a hat. Additional useful items include insect repellent, water, a
jack knife and paper bag for collecting specimens, a hand-lens, and a camera.
