UI offers workshop for women and minorities interested in highway construction careers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Women and minorities who are interested in a career in highway construction are invited to participate in a one-day workshop offered by the University of Iowa Pre-Vocational Training Program. The workshop will be Thursday, Sept. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Iowa Workforce Development Center at 800 7th Street SE in Cedar Rapids.

The workshop, offered through the Iowa Highway Opportunity Project, is intended to inform women and minorities about the opportunities in this high-paying field that is in serious need of workers. The workshop will also discuss the challenges working in highway construction, such as long hours, physical labor, travel, and safety considerations.

Following the workshop participants can get job referrals and information about support for new employees, including childcare assistance, mileage reimbursement and safety equipment purchase.

The UI Pre-Vocational Training Program recently received a $59,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation to fund the Iowa Highway Opportunity Project, which also has the support of the Associated General Contractors of Iowa.

The workshop is free and registration is not necessary. For further information, contact Craig C. Pickens, project manager at (319) 335-3433. Collect calls are accepted.
