UI offers workshop for women and minorities interested in highway
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Women and minorities who are interested in a career
in highway construction are invited to participate in a one-day workshop
offered by the University of Iowa Pre-Vocational Training Program. The
workshop will be Thursday, Sept. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the
Iowa Workforce Development Center at 800 7th Street SE in Cedar Rapids.
The workshop, offered through the Iowa Highway Opportunity Project,
is intended to inform women and minorities about the opportunities in this
high-paying field that is in serious need of workers. The workshop will
also discuss the challenges working in highway construction, such as long
hours, physical labor, travel, and safety considerations.
Following the workshop participants can get job referrals and information
about support for new employees, including childcare assistance, mileage
reimbursement and safety equipment purchase.
The UI Pre-Vocational Training Program recently received a $59,000 grant
from the Iowa Department of Transportation to fund the Iowa Highway Opportunity
Project, which also has the support of the Associated General Contractors
