Make-A-Wish children to meet Iowa Hawkeyes Sept. 5

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A group of 15 Eastern Iowa children in the Make-A-Wish program will have a chance to meet the 1998 Iowa Hawkeye football team Saturday, Sept. 5 as part of the University of Iowa Student Alumni Ambassadors' Gameday event at the Iowa-Central Michigan game.

The children will first attend a tailgate luncheon at 9 a.m. in the UI Recreation Building, where the Hawkeye Marching Band will play. The children, their families and Student Alumni Ambassador escorts will then attend the game at Kinnick Stadium, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Immediately following the game, the children will be entertained by the UI cheerleaders, dance team, Herky Hawk, and will meet Iowa football players and coaches at the northeast corner of the UI Recreation Building.

The Gameday event, now in its fourth year, is organized by the Student Alumni Ambassadors of the UI Alumni Association, which works with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide children between three and 18 years of age with an opportunity to see an Iowa football game and to meet the players and coaches.

"The children love going to the game, seeing the Hawkeyes, and enjoy the whole experience. Their faces just light up," said Colleen Hannigan, the Student Alumni Ambassador co-chairing the event.

Gameday has been recognized as a program of the year by the District V Student Alumni Association/Student Foundation (SAA/SF) network, a program of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) that seeks to promote the involvement of students in alumni relations, communications and philanthropy.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing activities for terminally and severely ill children and their families.

Major sponsors of Gameday are: the UI athletic department, Hargrave McEleny Motors, Old Capitol Screen Printers, Eicher Florist, University of Iowa Book Store, Big Ten Rentals, Advanced Auto Service, Hy-Vee, JC Penney Co., Cub Foods, Technigraphics, the Athlete's Foot, Chezik-Sayers Honda, Iowa Memorial Union Food Services, Quizno's Classic Subs, Wendy's Restaurants of Iowa City, Target, the Hawk Shop, and the Iowa City Holiday Inn.

None of the events in the outing will be open to the general public. For more information about the schedule and participants, contact Laura Gilman at (319) 335-3854.
