UI International Writing Program participants discuss 'Images of America' Nov. 11

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Participants in the University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will present a free panel discussion on impressions of American cultural identity at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the lounge of the UI International Center.

Titled "Images of America," the discussion will examine images abroad of popular American culture, "high" culture and literary achievements, as well as the insights that the writers have derived from their residency this fall at the UI and their travels throughout the country.

Panel members include Phan Trieu Hai of Vietnam, Emil Zopfi of Switzerland, German Carrasco of Chile, Fabian Casas of Argentina and Ed Folsom of the UI faculty.

Casas is a permanent contributor to the cultural section of Argentina's largest daily newspaper, Clarin, and is editor of the literary supplement. His first volume of poems, "Tuca," was chosen as the Poetry Book of the Year by Diario de Poesia en Argentina. Casas received first prize from the Argentina Authors' Society in 1992 and first prize from Columbia Prometeo Foundation in 1994.

Carrasco is the author of "Brindis," which received a prize in the House of the Americas Contest in Cuba. His works have also appeared in various anthologies, two publications from the University of Chile and the volume "Perrrera Arte."

Zopfi, a literary hero in Switzerland, has published seven novels, most recently "Kilchenstock, Der Bergstruz in den Kopfen." He is also the author of nine radio plays, and his awards include the Cultural and Literary Award from the Swiss Alpine Club, Canton and the City Award of Zurich.

Hai won the award for story of the year from Youth Magazine for his most recent collection of short stories, "A Man Lying on the Roof." He is the author of three other collections of short fiction. Many of his stories have been translated into English.

The IWP has brought to Iowa 19 established writers from 18 countries for a three-month residency at the UI.
