UI department of family medicine honors founding faculty member

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The library in the new department of family medicine offices at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) has been named in honor of Dr. Reuben B. Widmer, a founding faculty member of the department.

"Countless patients and their families, medical students, resident physicians and colleagues have benefited from his wisdom and remarkable skills," said Dr. Gerald Jogerst, assistant professor and interim head of the UI department of family medicine. "As a clinician, educator and researcher of primary care in the practicing physician's office, he is an example to all."

Widmer joined the department (originally called the department of family practice) in 1971 following 24 years of private practice in Winfield, Iowa.

Now retired and living in Green Valley, Ariz., Widmer was honored by friends and colleagues for his contributions during the recent Family Medicine Silver Jubilee celebration in Iowa City, sponsored by the UI department of family medicine.
