Homecoming queen to headline Halloween Coffeehouse Oct. 30
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at
the University of Iowa is sponsoring the October Coffeehouse featuring
a holiday party, performers and the UI Homecoming Queen. The event will
be Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at 10 South Gilbert St., Iowa City.
Coffeehouse organizer Suzi Steffen urges participants to wear costumes.
"Since Halloween, the pagan holy day Hallomas, and the Mexican celebration
of the Day of the Dead, we decided to make the October Coffeehouse a big
party," Steffen says.
Experienced and new performers will entertain at the event. Patty Ankrum,
of local folk group "Black Sheep," will perform some of her new
and developing work. UI graduate Angie Haag will read her poetry and short
fiction, and UI Homecoming Queen Tanna Frederick will perform part of her
one-woman show, "Questioning Jabe" which was produced at the
UI Theatres last month. There will be an open microphone where women
will read, drum, dance, sing and perform in various other ways, Steffen
says. Persons who wish to perform can sign-up at the coffeehouse or in
advance by calling the Women's Center.
The Stepping Up Project is helping to sponsor the coffeehouse. For
more information, or to join the coffeehouse committee in decorating for
the event, call the Women's Center at (319) 335-1486.
